SOKOL is Czech for "falcon." SOKOL is English for a great group of people bonded by a common ethnicity, heritage or interest. SOKOL has been in the United States since 1865 and has spread from coast to coast and from the northern border to the southern. ![]() Dr. Miroslav Tyrs Founded in 1862 in the Czech lands which later became Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic and Slovak Republic), the SOKOL organization continues today in the United States as a vital, thriving entity. Based on founder Dr. Miroslav Tyrs' credo of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body" the member units of the American Sokol offer physical training in gymnastics and other athletics, as well as providing cultural awareness and family oriented activities. Sokol's first unit in America was started in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1865. If you are looking for a safe place for children to learn personal discipline, physical fitness and gymnastic skills, song and dance, SOKOL is ready and waiting for them. SOKOL units offer gym classes and social activities for teenagers, too! Still feeling competitivie in your 20's, 40's or 60's? SOKOL has a place for you, too! Instead of going over the hill, you can be going over the vault. SOKOL activities vary from unit to unit. Most offer a wide range of classes in the gym and some have dance, twirling or language classes. SOKOL units sponsor dance groups, volleyball teams, gym classes, dinners, dances and other activities for adults. No one is too old for SOKOL. Join a SOKOL unit near you. Become active and you will have a richer life and will be a member of an organization with close ties to units around the world.

HAVE YOU YEARD?!
We have a new Executive Director! Greg Harris will begin his new adventure on Monday, May 6. Greg has non-profit experience working for several museums. His last position was as Vice President for Volunteer Services at National Building Museum in Washington, DC. He has revamped volunteer services programs and has vast experience with grants. He not only knows how to write them he was on a grant review committee. So he has considerable knowledge on the proper method of submitting grants to not only get them through the front door but more importantly how to better get them accepted and approved. Watch for more information on Greg and some of the first things he plans to do in his new position. Welcome aboard and Nazdar, Greg!

90 years ago, in May of 1918, Thomas G. Masaryk was greeted by 150,000 cheering Chicagoans. Chicago played a major role in the creation of Czechoslovakia and the First Republic. Chicagoans supplied critical early financing and key political support for Masaryk's mission. 90 years later, there will be a multi-event celebration, which people are calling "Czecho de Mayo." On Thursday, May 1st, will be the World Premiere of the documentary Accidental Army, The Amazing True Story of The Czechoslovak Legion. It is being produced by the Chicago non-profit, The Czech Legion Project. The Premiere will be at the Chicago History Museum at 7PM. The event is being sponsored by the Czechvar group at Anheuser-Busch. Tickets are free, but must be reserved. Seating is limited. You can reserve your tickets by calling 773-871-1179 during business hours, or by e- mailing czechlegion@mac.com. On Saturday night, May 3rd, there will be "The Grand Dumpling," a celebration of Chicago and Czechs and Slovaks at Klas Restaurant. 5734 W. Cermak in Cicero. Great entertainment, great food, and a great time are guaranteed. They will also be showing the Czechoslovak Legion documentary in a special room, if you weren't able to make the premiere. Only $25 per person with advance reservations ($35 at the door). Cash bar. Reservations are being taken at Klas 708-652-0795. Sunday, May 4th, there will be a Special Tour at Bohemian National Cemetery at 1PM. May should be a great month - and there are more events in the planning stages.
