After seeing their gym flooded, their mats on the sidewalk and their equipment in the dumpster Makenzie Horak, Victor and Carly Mark, all Sokol Cedar Rapids gymnasts, took to foot and made a difference. For a month’s time, every weekend, they put on their uniforms and went door to door asking for donations for Sokol Gymnastics. Their goal was to raise enough money to buy one mat, because one mat is better than none.

After knocking and stating their purpose, most people opened their ears, their minds and their hearts to the three gymnasts. Some asked the kids to do tricks and many back hand springs, forward rolls and cartwheels were done in front yards. Some wanted to know more about Sokol and stood talking to Sokol parents for quite some time. Some told their stories of the flood, all just as devastating as Sokol’s, if not worse. We soon found out how generous and caring people are. Even those affected by the flood themselves, opened their wallets and donated money to help the kids out. The kids love of gymnastics and Sokol was present and on display.

Kudos to Makenzie Horak and siblings Victor and Carly Mark for taking to foot and raising over $600.00 for Sokol Cedar Rapids. Never underestimate the power of Sokol youth!
